What Is the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP)?

The Repayment Assistance Plan, commonly called RAP, is one of the biggest changes to federal student loan repayment in 2026.

For borrowers leaving SAVE, RAP is likely to be a name they encounter frequently.

How Does RAP Work?

RAP is an income-driven repayment plan.

Monthly payments are based on income and household size, with a minimum monthly payment of $10. The plan can also provide qualifying borrowers with interest and principal benefits while they make required payments.

Is RAP the New SAVE?

Not exactly.

RAP and SAVE are different programs with different payment calculations and rules.

Borrowers should therefore not assume that enrolling in RAP will reproduce their previous SAVE payment.

Who Can Use RAP?

Eligibility depends on the borrower's federal loans.

For borrowers whose loans were all disbursed on or after July 1, 2026, RAP is generally the only available income-driven repayment plan. Borrowers with older eligible loans may have additional choices.

Understanding the Difference Matters

The best repayment option isn't necessarily the same for every borrower.
