How Long Does Student Loan Rehabilitation Take?

If you're considering student loan rehabilitation to resolve defaulted federal student loans, one of the biggest questions is how long the process takes.

For eligible Direct Loans and FFEL Program loans, rehabilitation generally requires nine qualifying monthly payments within 10 consecutive months. That means borrowers should typically expect rehabilitation to be a process that takes several months rather than an immediate solution.

Why Does Rehabilitation Take So Long?

Rehabilitation is designed to demonstrate a borrower's ability to successfully return to repayment.

After entering an approved rehabilitation agreement, the borrower makes the required payments according to the terms of that agreement.

Once the rehabilitation requirements are successfully completed, the eligible loans are removed from default and transferred to a federal student loan servicer.

What Happens While You're Completing Rehabilitation?

The loan remains in default during much of the rehabilitation process.

This distinction can be particularly important for borrowers already experiencing federal collection activity. Current Federal Student Aid guidance states that involuntary collections, including wage garnishment and Treasury offset, may continue until the loan is no longer in default or until at least five rehabilitation payments have been made.

What Happens When Rehabilitation Is Finished?

Successful rehabilitation removes the loan's default status and restores access to certain federal student loan benefits.

Federal Student Aid also requests removal of the record of default from the borrower's credit history after successful rehabilitation, although previously reported late payments can remain.

Smart Loan Aid helps borrowers understand the rehabilitation timeline, payment requirements, documentation, and what to expect once their loans return to regular servicing.
